Urban heat islands are urbanized areas that experience higher temperatures than peripheral areas. Structures such as buildings, roads and other infrastructure absorb and release solar heat more than natural landscapes such as forests and water bodies. Urban areas where these structures are highly concentrated and green space is limited become "islands" of higher temperatures compared to outlying areas.
Using green roofs throughout a city can help reduce urban heat islands and cool the air.
